Guwahati to Shillong - A Scenic Overture
Our voyage commenced in Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast. As we set course for Shillong,
Meghalaya's captivating capital, the air crackled with anticipation. The picturesque drive unfurled
through winding roads, revealing tantalizing glimpses of the region's breathtaking vistas. Our first
stop was at the mesmerizing Barapani Lake, also known as Umiam Lake, a tranquil expanse of
water embraced by the rolling Sylvian hills. The view was nothing short of captivating, and the
camera lens became an extension of my awe-struck gaze.
Upon reaching Shillong, we settled into our charming homestay and ventured into the bustling local
markets. The city's infectious energy was palpable, and I found myself enthralled by the array of
unique handicrafts and fresh produce on display. As the day drew to a close, we indulged in a
delectable meal, savoring the authentic flavors of Khasi cuisine.
Day 2: Cherrapunji - A Symphony of Waterfalls
The following morning, we set out for Cherrapunji, a place renowned for its extraordinary rainfall.
The journey was fueled by a sense of wonder, knowing we were about to witness some of nature's
most magnificent creations. And we were not disappointed!
Our first encounter was with the majestic Wei Sawdong Falls, a three-tiered cascade plunging
down a verdant cliff. The sheer power and splendor of the falls left me speechless. Next, we stood
before the iconic Nohkalikai Falls, the highest plunging waterfall in India. The thunderous roar
of water crashing into the gorge below was a symphony of nature's raw power.
Our waterfall odyssey continued with a visit to the enchanting Seven Sisters Falls, a series of
seven cascading waterfalls that evoke the flowing tresses of celestial siblings. The panoramic
vista was a feast for the eyes.
An Unforgettable Trek to the Double Decker Root Bridge
No exploration of Cherrapunji is complete without a pilgrimage to the remarkable Double Decker
Living Root Bridge. This natural marvel, formed by the intertwined roots of ancient fig trees, is a
testament to nature's ingenuity and the resourcefulness of the local Khasi people. Trekking
through the dense forest to reach the bridge was an adventure in itself, with the melodies of
birdsong and the invigorating mountain air heightening my senses.
For the intrepid traveler seeking a more challenging expedition, I highly recommend extending your
journey to the Rainbow Falls. While my own itinerary did not include this hidden gem, tales of its
ethereal beauty from fellow travelers have left me yearning to witness it firsthand.
As daylight began to wane, we ascended to Shillong Peak, the highest point in Meghalaya. From
this vantage point, we were treated to a breathtaking panorama encompassing the entire city and
even the distant plains of Bangladesh. It was a fitting finale to a day brimming with unforgettable
experiences.
Day 3: Mawlynnong - The Cleanest Village in Asia
After a hearty breakfast, we embarked on a journey to Mawlynnong, a village celebrated for its
unparalleled cleanliness. As we entered this pristine haven, we were greeted by immaculate streets
adorned with vibrant flowers and meticulously manicured gardens. The residents' profound pride in
maintaining the beauty of their surroundings was evident in every detail.
Our exploration led us to the nearby Jingmaham Living Root Bridge, another testament to
nature's architectural prowess. This bridge, woven from the intertwined roots of a single fig tree,
reflects the patience and ingenuity of the local people.
A Boat Ride on the Crystal-Clear Umngot River
Our next destination was Dawki, a town nestled on the border of India and Bangladesh, renowned
for the Umngot River, widely regarded as the cleanest river in India. The river's crystalline
waters mirrored the sky above, creating an illusion of boats gliding through the air. We couldn't
resist the allure of a boat ride, drifting along the tranquil waters and immersing ourselves in the
surrounding beauty. It was a truly magical interlude.
Day 4: Guwahati and Cultural Delights
Our return journey to Guwahati included a stopover at Lady Hydari Park, a tranquil oasis in the
heart of Shillong. With its well-maintained gardens, mini zoo, and Japanese-style garden, the park
offered a delightful respite.
Upon arriving in Guwahati, we checked into our homestay and decided to delve into the cultural
heritage of the region at the Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra. This cultural museum showcases
the rich tapestry of Assam and the Northeast, housing a captivating collection of artifacts, costumes,
and musical instruments that provide a glimpse into the vibrant traditions of the region.
As evening descended, we embarked on a serene cruise along the Brahmaputra River, the
lifeline of Assam. The setting sun painted the sky in golden hues, creating a breathtaking backdrop
as we sailed past the cityscape and the distant hills. It was an idyllic way to conclude our day.
4th Day (Shillong – Guwahati) 100km | 3 hours approx:
We start our day with a visit to the Lady Hydari Park which is a well maintained park with a mini zoo. It is as a Japanese style garden lined with orchids and rhododendrons. We shall proceed with our onward journey to Guwahati. Post checking into a home stay you can chose to pay a visit to Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra a cultural museum displaying the artistic excellence of Assam and the north-eastern region. It has open air theaters, eateries and emporiums. You can spend your evening on a cruise on the Brahmaputra. Finally, return to the hotel and get some well deserved rest.
Farewell and a Call to Adventure
On the final day of our journey, we paid homage to the Kamakhya Temple, one of India's most
revered Hindu pilgrimage sites, before bidding farewell to this enchanting region.
